Entrepreneur and founder of PayPal, SpaceX and last but not least Tesla, Elon Musk earlier this year unveiled the latter’s new car, the much anticipated Model 3.
It has been cited as not only another electric car, but one that could effectively kill the petrol car. Even though the car will not enter the market before the end of next year, it is on target to be the most popular electric car that has ever been produced. Just days after it having been unveiled, pre-orders of the car topped more than 400,000. To put it into perspective, that is more than the number of electric cars which was sold in the US in the whole of 2015.
During the unveiling Musk highlighted the troubling trends of climate change and explained the curve for emissions and temperatures is only going one way and that is up. Therefore, sustainable energy and transport is so important. He said this new model showed that it is possible to make electric cars both great and affordable.
The starting price for the Model 3 before incentives stands at $35,000 and the car achieves an impressive range of 215 miles and are able to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in under 6 seconds.
Moving forward Tesla will rapidly increase charging points and places where Tesla cars can be traded. Musk stated that where there is electricity there will be charging points. Today there is 3,608 Superchargers and 3,689 Destination Chargers, but by the end of 2017, Tesla will double the number of Superchargers to 7,200 and quadruple the number of Destination Chargers to 15,000. Musk stated that this would mean that you will be able to go virtually everywhere in an electric car. Today a Tesla can be bought in 215 locations, but by the end of 2017 that would more than double rising to 241 locations.
With the unveiling of the Model 3, Musk and Tesla has directly taken on the petrol car, and with the increased debate of air pollution dominating many cities, the day of the petrol car could be on borrowed time.
