How our climate monitoring data works

Climate monitoring datasets are updated according to the frequency and availability of their underlying sources. Some datasets provide near-real-time information, while others are updated weekly, monthly or annually.

Where appropriate, we distinguish between:

  • Current data — the latest available observations
  • Historical data — completed and validated periods
  • Archive data — preserved historical snapshots of our live datasets
  • Trends and comparisons — longer-term changes and comparisons with historical averages

This approach allows current conditions to be monitored without losing the historical record needed to understand how climate-related conditions are changing over time.

Data sources

Our climate monitoring datasets draw on authoritative scientific and international sources, including European and international agencies, scientific institutions, satellite observations and national monitoring agencies.

Individual datasets identify their specific sources and methodologies.
