This historic work is lowering household energy costs, creating hundreds of thousands of high-quality clean energy jobs, and building a thriving clean energy economy, all while ensuring America’s energy security and independence with record energy production. As President, she will unite Americans to tackle the climate crisis as she builds on this historic work, advances environmental justice, protects public lands and public health, increases resilience to climate disasters, lowers household energy costs, creates millions of new jobs, and continues to hold polluters accountable to secure clean air and water for all. As the Vice President said at the international climate conference, COP28, she knows that meeting this global challenge will require global cooperation and she is committed to continuing and building upon the United States’ international climate leadership. She and Governor Walz will always fight for the freedom to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and live free from the pollution that fuels the climate crisis.

Tuesday, 13th of August, 2024

In, at least by some, much anticipated interview between the Owner of X (formerly Twitter) and Tesla founder Elon Musk and Donald Trump took place yesterday. Musk who has endorsed Trump and has in recent years taken very extreme right wing views shared some astonishing climate and energy views:

“I should probably say something about like, you know, maybe my views on, you know, climate change and oil and gas, because I think I’m probably different from what most people would assume.

Because my views are actually pretty, I think moderate in this regard, which is that I don’t think we should vilify the oil and gas industry and the people that have worked very hard in those industries to provide the necessary energy to support the economy. And if we were to stop using oil and gas right now, we would all be starving and the economy would collapse.

You know, the world has a certain demand for oil and gas and it’s probably better if the United States provides that than some other countries. And it would help with prosperity in the US. And at the same time, obviously my view is like, we do over time wanna move to a sustainable energy economy because eventually you do run out of, I mean, you run out of oil and gas.

It’s not infinite. And there is some risk. I think it’s not, the risk is not as high as, you know, a lot of people say it is with respect to global warming.

But I think if you just keep increasing the cost per million in the atmosphere long enough, eventually it actually simply gets uncomfortable to breathe. People don’t realize this. If you go past a thousand parts per million of CO2, you start getting headaches and nausea.

And so we’re now in the sort of 400 range. We’re adding, I think about roughly two parts per million per year. So, I mean, it still gives us, so what it means is like, we still have quite a bit of time, we don’t need to rush and we don’t need to like, you know, stop farmers from farming or, you know, prevent people from having steaks or basic stuff like that.”

Kamala Harris have selected the Governor of Minnesota Tim Walz as her running mate. Looking at the options available, this is a choice that climate advocates would be relieved about as Walz is one that not only agree action on climate change is important, but one that champions it.

Mitt Romney, the outgoing senator from Utah and who ran against Barack Obama in the 2012 Presidential election has flip-flopped on climate change. As a Governor of Massachusetts from 2003-2007 he adopted a energy conservation view , and starting off his 2012 campaign he acknowledged climate change was at least partly contributed by human activity, but later in the campaign he completely reversed course saying he did not accept the science that human activity contributed to climate change. Famously Romney mocked Obama’s climate stance in the televised election debate saying: “President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet, my promise is to help you and your family”.

As we argued back then, Romney had taken a sudden route down climate denialism.

After being defeated by Obama, Romney took a break from political office, but refused to endorse or vote for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. In 2018 he successfully ran for Senator of Utah. He quickly became an outlier in his party by being a strong critic of Donald Trump voting for his impeachment and was harassed by his supporters when on the way to certify the election results in the 2020 elections.

His climate stance had changed now, which the above Senate Budget Committee hearing was an evidence of. He said he had no doubt about the science around human induced climate change. He called for a carbon tax – but said that the Democratic approach to tackling it was ineffective and hurting the economy and used a popular Republican attack line that the real villain is China as the world’s biggest emitter. He is right that China is the biggest emitter, but he did not consider that at 1.4 billion, the country’s population is vastly bigger than US at 341,800 and if you were to calculate emissions per capita the US is by far the biggest emitter if you were to compare those two countries.

On his Senator website Romney further adds: “The United States can and should be a worldwide leader in energy production and in developing solutions to climate change. Any long-term, sustainable solution requires support from both sides of the political aisle.”

Vying to win Romney’s seat in this years Senate elections is Republican John Curtis and Democrat Caroline Gleich. Both candidates accept the science of climate change with Curtis serving as the Chairman of the Conservative Climate Caucus, but Gleich an environmentalist, influencer, skier and mountaineer has accused him of greenwashing.

In June, Inslee discussed this issue with the climate and energy journalist David Roberts on his Volts podcast (see below).

Inslee is the longest serving US Governor and is not running for a third term.
